Basic Browser Skills

While nearly everyone uses a web browser, some people use web browsers less efficiently than they could.

Anatomy of a Web Browser

Tips, Tricks, Things to Note

  • Using the address bar to type a website address is often quicker than other ways to get to that site. Compare these two ways of getting to the AMBS website:

    1. Type "AMBS" or "Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary" in a search engine (Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go). Click the appropriate result.

    2. Type "ambs.edu" in your browser's address bar.

  • If a page loads and doesn't look quite right, try reloading it with the reload icon.

  • If you're not sure where a link goes, hover over it. The status bar will often tell you where the link points.

  • Use tabs in your web browser to keep multiple websites open at the same time (no need to minimize windows; just click tabs).

  • Bonus tip about the status bar: lots of other applications on your computer have status bars! Microsoft Word's status bar, for example, tells you what page you're on, how many words are in your document, whether you're in overtype or insert mode, and other goodies. Microsoft Excel's might show you the sum or average of the cells you have highlighted. These things are often super-useful.
